Can you wash a jet ski cover?

Your jet ski cover is exposed to the elements, keeping your watercraft protected from the sun, as well as mold and mildew buildup. When mold and mildew collect on jet ski covers, you might be wondering if washing it will cause damage. The good news is, you can wash a jet ski cover, either in a washing machine or by hand. As long as your jet ski cover is in one piece and isn’t falling apart, you can give it a quick wash and get it looking great again.

The washing machine method

You can clean your jet ski cover quickly and easily by putting it in the washing machine, but only use a washing machine that doesn’t have a center agitator. A center agitator can twist up the cover, enlarging tears and other areas of damage. There should also be some extra room in the washing machine after you’ve put in the jet ski cover, so make sure you’re using a big enough washing machine for a good, deep clean. Follow these steps to wash your jet ski cover in a washing machine:

  1. Place the cover into the machine.
  2. Pour in an all-purpose cleaner like Simple Green.
  3. Select the gentlest cycle for washing.
  4. Rinse the cover twice to ensure all the cleaner is washed out.

The brush, hose and soap method

If you only need to spot clean your cover, rather than washing the whole thing, you can easily clean it with just a brush, hose and soap. Simple Green is recommended, as it’s all-natural and eco-friendly. Avoid using bleach, as some residue can make it onto the jet ski and into the water. You’ll have to spend some time scrubbing if you choose this method, using a sturdy brush to clean off deep, ground in dirt, as well as mold and mildew that’s collected on the cover. Here are the steps you should take if you choose this cleaning method:

  1. Mix one quart of warm water with one ounce of Simple Green, or other all-purpose cleaner.
  2. Soak the entire cover with the cleaning mixture using a spray bottle.
  3. Using your brush, scrub any problem areas and work the cleaner into the dirt and grime.
  4. Spread the cover out on a flat surface and, using your hose, rinse it off until all suds are gone.

The mold and mildew remover method

If you’re dealing with stuck-on mold and mildew on your jet ski cover, a mold and mildew remover can be a real lifesaver. Whenever you notice mold appearing or you start smelling mildew, give it a spray to remove the elements and prevent them from coming back.

Make sure you’re using a mold and mildew remover that’s intended for marine usage and is safe for fabrics. These products are safe for using on your cover, as long as you follow the product’s specific instructions when cleaning.

How do you store a jet ski cover?

When you’re out making waves and aren’t using your jet ski covers, storing them the right way is essential. Keep jet ski covers only in a cool, dry place to prolong its lifespan. Good storage spots include a garage, shed or storage bin. You can usually roll up or fold the cover for simple, compact storage. Ensure the cover is completely dry before you put it in storage.
